Hundreds of Bulgarians have gathered at the Nezavisimost square in the capital Sofia to protest against the country’s government for a 50th evening in a row.

Protesters were expected to hold 5 minutes of silence in front of Parliament later on Friday – one minute for each 10 days in which the rulers have refused to hear their calls for resignation.

The protests were prompted by a series of highly controversial appointments and wider concerns about corruption.

Earlier on Friday, Bulgaria’s lawmakers held their last sitting before their prolonged summer break. The MPs will be back to work on September 4.

The rallies are expected to once again reach an attendance in the tens of thousands once the holiday season is over and the MPs return to work.
