The Bulgarian National Television (BNT) has said that it not yet decided if the country will compete at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest in Denmark.

BNT has explained in a press release that hearings of candidates to take over as the broadcaster’s director-general are currently taking place, with Bulgaria’s participation in next year’s Eurovision contest depending on the stance of the elected candidate.

One of the runners, incumbent BNT Director-General Vyara Ankova said that she wanted Bulgaria to continue taking part in the competition. She said that the public broadcaster was committed to giving Bulgarian performers access to the largest European stage.

Another candidate, Valeri Todorov, said that the future of Bulgaria’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest lay in closer co-operation between BNT and other media. He too emphasised the role of fun and music programs and said that a public broadcaster should avoid commercial formats.

The process of hearings of candidates to become director-general of BNT will continue on Wednesday. Four of the six candidates have been already heard by the Bulgarian Council for Electronic Media. The Council will announce its choice no later than July 26.
