Passengers Serviced by Bulgarian Airports Up 3% in 2012 - Eurostat

In 2012, Bulgarian airports serviced over 6.8 M passengers, up by 3% from the total of around 6.6 M registered in 2011, according to Eurostat.

According to the Eurostat report on air passenger transport in the EU-28, as cited by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA), Bulgaria is one of the 19 EU Member States to register an increase in passenger volumes in 2012 compared to 2011.

The biggest growth rates were observed in two Baltic countries, namely Lithuania (+18 %) and Estonia (+15 %).

At the other end of the scale, notable decreases were observed in passenger transport for Slovenia and Slovakia (-14 % between 2011 and 2012 for both countries).

To a lesser extent, a decline of 7 % was recorded between 2011 and 2012 in the Czech Republic and Latvia, Greece reported a decrease of 5%, while Spain registered a decrease by 3%.

According to Eurostat, there is no Bulgarian airport within the top-30 airports in terms of passenger transport.

London's Heathrow tops the ranking with nearly 70 M passengers handled in 2012, followed by Paris' Charles de Gaulle with 61 M, Frankfurt Airport with 57 M, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol with 50 M, and Madrid's Barjas Airport with 45 M, and Munich Airport with 38 M.

At the bottom of the ranking is Alicante Airport, where passenger transport decreased by 11 % in 2012 compared to 2011, registering over 8.8 M passengers.
