2 Defendants in College Student Murder Case in Bulgaria Sentenced to 18 Years in Prison

The Sofia City Court has sentenced two of the three defendants charged with the gruesome murder of 20-year-old Stoyan Baltov to 18 years of imprisonment and has acquitted the third defendant.

Alexander Danailov and Svetlozar Stoilov were handed sentences of 18 years of imprisonment, while Vili Georgiev was acquitted, according to reports of the Bgnes news agency.

20-year-old pharmacy student Stoyan Baltov was brutally beaten to death on December 5, 2008 at around 3 am, in front of the "Amnesia" disco in Sofia's Studentski Grad (College Town) district.

The trial dragged on for around 4 years, the first court sitting held on July 3, 2010.

On July 16, 2013, the prosecuting authority demanded that the three defendants, Danailov, Georgiev and Stoilov, be sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment each.

The ruling of the Sofia City Court can be appealed and protested within 15 days.

Apart from the prison sentences, Danailov and Stoilov will also have to pay a total of over BGN 600 000 to the family of Baltov and cover the court expenses of over BGN 30 000.

Danailov and Stoilov have been released on bail and Georgiev has been released upon signed promise for appearance.
