It would be useful for the European Union to take measures in order to restrict the actions of Hezbollah, US Ambassador to Bulgaria Marcie Ries said in the Black Sea city of Burgas on Thursday.

According to the BGNES news agency, Ries expressed her satisfaction at the statement of Bulgarian Tsvetlin Yovchev, who said earlier that the country has not changed its stance on last year’s terror attack in Burgas – and that it has evidence pointing at Hezbollah.

The ongoing mass anti-government protests in Bulgaria have resulted in useful discussions on key topics, Ries also said Thursday.

“I believe this is part of democracy and I find it very positive that this dialogue has taken place,” she said, as cited by Dnevnik.bg.

July 18 marks one year since the bus bombing at the airport of the Black Sea city of Burgas that killed five Israeli tourists, their Bulgarian bus driver and the bomber.

On Tuesday, Israeli media quoted high ranking Israeli Foreign Ministry officials in saying the EU's Foreign Ministers are likely to add Hezbollah's military wing to the body's list of designated terror organizations. The officials have said Britain and the United States are pressing several EU countries that are reluctant to back such a move.

Mass protests against Bulgaria’s Socialist-led government have been staged for 35 days now. The rallies were triggered by the appointment of a controversial media mogul as head of the country’s national security agency. The appointment was reversed in June, but protesters have demanded the government’s resignation over suspected ties with oligarchs.
