Four of the children of prominent Bulgarian poet Edvin Sugarev have now joined him in his hunger strike, demanding the resignation of the country’s Socialist-led government that has been accused of having ties with oligarchs.

Boris Sugarev, Ella McGee, Yoan Sugarev, Kristian Sugarev, Teya Sugareva and Stefan Sugarev have written an open letter to their father, expressing their support for his courageous action.

“We understand the importance of your word – but we refuse to accept the fact that it remains unheard,” the letter says.

Yoan, Kristian, Teya and Stefan have declared that they are now on a hunger strike.

“Despite your advice that no one should follow you in your hunger strike, we decided that we cannot leave you alone – and we are joining you.”

On Tuesday, Edvin Sugarev once again refused to end his anti-government hunger strike, despite fears that his health would deteriorate considerably.

Sugarev, a former lawmaker, has now been on a hunger strike for 22 days.

The series of anti-government protests in Bulgaria was triggered by the scandalous appointment of controversial media mogul Delyan Peevski as Chair of the State Agency for National Security (DANS) on June 14.

Although the appointment was revoked, Bulgarians went on to demand that the cabinet of PM Plamen Oresharski resign collectively.

Edvin Sugarev launched his hunger strike on June 26.
