Former Barcelona striker Hristo Stoichkov has stepped down as coach of troubled Bulgarian club CSKA Sofia.
Stoichkov said in a statement that he was “fed up” with the “endless lies” of CSKA’s owners, local company Titan.
"I had the support of the players and my staff. We endured until it became clear there's no chance of promises being fulfilled," the statement said.
“This is not my environment. This is not my understanding of fair, professional and transparent work,” he added.
Stoichkov took charge of CSKA on June 5.
The owners of the financially troubled team then unexpectedly announced that they had transferred all their million shares to the former prolific forward.
CSKA, Bulgarian champions 31 times, have been struggling for some time with financial difficulties. The club declared bankruptcy on June 22 and was expected to attempt a merger with another club in order to maintain its involvement in top flight Bulgarian football.
The debt-ridden club’s future is still uncertain, but it would likely have to work its way up from the third division.
