Turkish Parliament Launches Consultations on New Constitution amid Protests

Turkish Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek has started urgent consultations with the leaders of parliamentary parties regarding the drafting and adoption of a new constitution for the country.
The move comes against the backdrop of largescale street protests in major Turkish cities, which started end of May.
Protesters are rallying against what they see as a wrong, pro-Islamist direction that longtime PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan is leading Turkey.
Saturday it was announced that Cicek has started constitution consultations with Erdogan as leader of the largest parliamentary party, AKP, which has 326 MPs out of 550 in the Meclis.
Other parliamentary represented parties in Turkey are the opposition republican CHP led by Kemal K?l?cdaroglu, nationalist MHP led by Devlet Bahceli, and Kurdish BDP led by Selahattin Demirtas.
The meeting of Great National Assembly Speaker Cicek and party leaders is scheduled for next week.
Turkey's current Constitution was adopted in November 1982.
