Hannes Swoboda, the leader of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialist and Democrats, S&D, in the European Parliament, has called on center-right party Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria, GERB, to return to the Bulgarian Parliament.

"Boyko Borisov should lead GERB back into parliament. Boycotting the National Assembly demonstrates a lack of commitment to parliamentary democracy," Swoboda stated, as cited by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency.

He voiced expectations that the Group of the European People's Party (EPP) would back his call and encourage GERB MPs to take the responsibility assigned to them by the Bulgarian people more seriously.

"The new government made mistakes which it had to rectify, a functioning political system requires both the government and the opposition to seek constructive dialogue," Swoboda added.

On July 2, Swoboda called on the Bulgarian government to distance themselves from the policy of the nationalist party Ataka.

Speaking during a sitting of the Party of European Socialists (PES) in Sofia on June 22, Swoboda gave high marks to Sergei Stanishev, PES President and leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, and the Cabinet of Prime Minister, Plamen Oresharski, amidst mass anti-government protest rallies in Sofia and several other cities.
