The Trakiya highway in southern Bulgaria, connecting the capital Sofia and the Black Sea city of Burgas, which has been built for 40 years now, will most likely be competed on July 8.

The highway will be open for use on July 15 which is the deadline in the contract, says engineer Lazar Lazarov, Chairman of the Road Infrastructure Agency. He was adamant the highway will open on time and the last finishing touches will be completed by next Monday.

Lazarov also promised signs to all gas stations, but stated he was surprised that no companies have expressed interest in building new facilities near the highway despite the granted permits.

In mid-June, he said the road will be finished by July 5.

The opening of Trakiya highway will be a spectacular event because for a first time Bulgaria will have a highway that connects Sofia to the Black Sea, Ivan Ivanov, the construction company manager is quoted in saying.

The construction of the highway started in the distant 1974, but was stopped several times due to lack of money. Allocated EU funds made its completion possible. The total length of the Trakiya highway will be 360 km.
