Bulgaria’s former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov, who faces fresh charges for allegedly attempting to obstruct justice, has told reporters that he does remember the case described by prosecutors.

On Monday, Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov announced that Tsvetanov would face new charges – this time for refusing the deployment of special surveillance devices during an investigation against Orlin Todorov, former head of Veliko Tarnovo’s regional anti-mafia unit.

Prosecutors said Tsvetanov violated the Special Surveillance Devices Act and the Penal Code by refusing the deployment of special surveillance devices.

“I just learned that from the media,” Tsvetanov told reporters upon asked about the new charges.

He said that the Interior Ministry cooperated accordingly in the Orlin Todorov case, adding that Todorov was arrested.

Tsvetanov’s immunity as lawmaker was lifted earlier in June, when he was accused of failing to exercise proper control over Interior Ministry officials, thereby enabling his subordinates to eavesdrop high-profile politicians, magistrates and businesspeople.
