Bulgaria's law enforcement authorities have broken a tax evasion network that had injured the state budget with some BGN 1 M, according to estimates.

The operation, performed jointly by the police and the State Agency for National Security (DANS), started back in 2011.

The network engaged in registering fake deals with chicken meat, imported from within the EU (Poland and Romania), stated Bulgarian Ministry of Interior Chief Secretary Svetlozar Lazarov for Focus News Agency.

As a results of the schemes, the venture managed to avoid the full payment of VAT and corporate tax, said the Chief Secretary.

The network had premises in capital Sofia, as well as in Varna and Targovishte.

Three people have been detained, one of them with a previous criminal record.

More high-profile operations are to be completed within the coming week, revealed commissar Lazarov.
