The interim head of Bulgaria’s State Agency for National Security, DANS, Vladimir Pisanchev, vowed to retain the post if offered.

Responding to a question of a reporter of BGNES news agency whether he would assume the office of Head of DANS, the interim chief Pisanchev confirmed PM Plamen Oresharski’s statement that his possible nomination was discussed alongside that of controversial media mogul Delyan Peevski.

Pisanchev, who stressed he has 20 years of experience, working in the national security system, admitted that talks over the matter were held with him, but his appointment as chief of DANS was only a possibility.

“DANS has to work, and this will be one of the conditions for accepting to head the agency, if invited to do so,” Vladimir Pisanchev said.

The chief Prosecutor, Sotir Tsatsarov, the interior Minister, Tsvetlin Yovchev, and DANS interim head Pisanchev discussed on Monday measures to counteract crime.

On Friday, Bulgaria's Parliament appointed Delyan Peevski, media mogul and MP of predominantly ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), as head of the national security agency, stirring a wave of protests across the country.

The step caused President Rosen Plevneliev to ask Parliament to reconsider the decision.
Plevneliev also scheduled an extraordinary meeting of the Consultative Council for National Security for June 20.

On Saturday, Peevski issued a statement saying that he was ready to step down "in the name of citizens, society and the state."

However, the move failed to curb the massive peaceful protests in the country, with thousands gathering in Sofia and other major cities for a fourth day on Monday.
Many protesters have demanded the resignation of the Socialist-led government of Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski, which took over at the end of May.
