Bulgaria’s Parliament approved on Wednesday the appointment of Tsvetan Gunev as deputy governor of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) in charge of bank supervision.

The new deputy governor at Bulgaria’s central bank was elected with the votes of 175 MPs, two voted against and two abstained.

Gunev will take over from incumbent Rumen Simeonov on June 16 for a term of six years. Simeonov has been in charge of bank supervision at the BNB for the past six  years.

Gunev has been working at the central bank since 1992, most recently he was in charge of the supervision and monitoring of credit institutions.

His nomination took by surprise the country’s banking sector as most believed that Simeonov will be nominated for a new term.

Gunev was nominated by the central bank governor Ivan Iskrov and is believed to be backed by the Socialist and ethnic Turkish parties, a speculation, which they deny.
