Petar Angelov, MP of the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) party, has vowed to request the lifting of his immunity from prosecution, according to the Deputy Chair of the party.

In a Sunday interview for the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), Kamen Kostadinov, Deputy Chair of DPS, made clear that Angelov would submit a declaration seeking the removal of his MP immunity on Monday.

On Friday, the prosecuting authority requested that the MP immunity of Angelov, who faces charges of participating in a crime group and committing tax fraud to the tune of over BGN 4 M, be lifted.

Bulgaria's Specialized Prosecutor's Office launched pre-trial proceedings into the matter on February 2, according to reports of Sega daily.

Over 40 witnesses have testified, the report of computer forensic experts is ready, an expert report of economic experts is being prepared, and the case materials also include a number of pieces of evidence and documents seized by the authorities.

Despite claims that the trial is an act of revenge of center-right party Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) against him, Angelov has voiced readiness to give up his immunity.
