Turkey’s embattled Prime Minister has once again demanded an immediate end of the massive protests in the country.

At Istanbul airport he told some 10 000 supporters who were welcoming him home from a four-day North Africa tour that the protests bordered on illegality “and must end immediately.”

"We have never been for building tension and polarisation, but we cannot applaud brutality," he said, as cited by the BBC.

But as he spoke, thousands of anti-government protesters were also rallying in Istanbul's Taksim Square.

Some of the demonstrators in Taksim chanted "Tayyip resign", while others sang and danced.

At least three people have been killed, including a policeman, and Turkey's national doctors' union said more than 4,300 have been injured in recent days.
