Bulgarians in Istanbul have been advised to stay clear of the city’s Takism square.

Bulgarians have been also urged to avoid the central parts of the Besiktas and Beyoglu districts in Istanbul, as well as any place at which there are massive gatherings of people.

The Bulgarian Consulate-General in Istanbul says no Bulgarians have been reported injured during the protests in the country.

“Bulgaria is closely monitoring the events of recent days in Turkey, our neighbouring country and a friend. We are concerned about the violence and express our concern about the excessive use of force by police against the protesters,” Bulgarian Foreign Minister Kristian Vigenin declared on Sunday.

More than a week after protests began sweeping Turkey, demonstrators kept up their occupation of bustling Taksim Square on Monday amid appeals from the government to abandon the rallies and return to work and school.

The protests initially targeted plans to build on a treasured Istanbul park but have spread into nationwide unrest against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
