Violent assaults by police on protesters in Turkey have reignited Sunday night not only in Ankara and Izmir, but also again in Istanbul, where the situation had quieted down through the day.

Information agencies and social networks are reporting extraordinary amounts of tear gas filling streets in Istanbul.

Tear gas use is reportedly heaviest in the Besiktas district, where the Istanbul offices of Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan are located.

In Izmir, police and protesters came to heavy clashes, after the police made extensive use of water cannons.

There are reports of police firing rubber bullets directly at protesters in capital Ankara, where tear gas use is also extensive.

Turkish media report that police in Ankara are also targeting make-shit infirmaries set up by protesters and other citizens willing to help them.

People across Turkey have shown their support for the protesters by opening shops, restaurants and hotels for rescue, by donating food, including milk and lemons to alleviate the effects of tear gas.

What has begun as a rally for the preservation of a city park - Gezi in Istanbul - has turned into a nationwide rally against the allegedly autocratic and Islamist-leaning regime of PM Erdogan.
