At least 1,700 people have been detained in the protests that flooded Turkey Friday through Sunday, according to police statistics.

The rallies, which started in support of Istanbul's Gezi park on Taksim square, grew to tremendous prorportion, after police used outrageous force against the Gezi protesters.

Protests of solidarity were held at other large Turkish cities, including capital Ankara, Izmir and Antalya.

Police used tear gas not only in Istanbul - a case that became notorious for its extensiveness - but also in Ankara.

Several people are reported dead, and several hundred injured, although official statistics are much lower.

Many protesters saw the police brutality as being a logical representation of the allegedly authoritarian regime of Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
