Bulgarian President, Rosen Plevneliev, pledged Thursday to stay true to his own rule to never endorse an appointment of an individual linked to the Communist regime and its State Security, DS.

When accepting the Foreign Affairs Minister post Wednesday, former Socialist MEP, Kristian Vigenin, commented that many of the country's diplomats, exposed as agents of DS, have been humiliated in one of the most undignified acts of the previous Cabinet of the center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB.

Plevneliev stated in the aftermath that he was glad the new top diplomat is young, ambitious, and competent, but stressed he could not be pleased with a U-turn back to the dependencies of the Communist services in appointing diplomats linked to them.

"I wish success to the new Minister, but I can never endorse ambassadors that worked for DS because this does not fit in everything I believe in. I wish to myself a modern diplomacy with young and competent ambassadors," the President told journalists at the ceremony where he hosted the traditional high-school prom for youth living in orphanages.
