Shelves with free books will be placed inside four Sofia subway stations on May 24 when the country celebrates the Day of Slavic Script and Bulgarian Culture.

The initiative "Books in the Subway" belongs to the civic association "Politronik" and the municipal "Metropolitan" company.

The four stations are: National Stadium, Serdika, National Palace of Culture, and Sofia University.

The books will offer a variety of genres. Everyone can borrow a book to read while waiting for the metro or take it home and return it when finished.

"Our mission is to support the values of civil society in Bulgaria and a strong civil society is created by informed citizens. It is not easy to manipulate an informed person. What is also important in this initiative is the effort to make people think of themselves and of others as part of society, part of a community, where everyone has the right to benefit from a book and the duty to keep it in good condition and return it for others to use," Stanislav Ivanov from "Politronik" says.

The books are new and have all been donated by publishing businesses and individuals. The name of the donor is written inside them.
