Bulgarians Cast 80 000 Void Ballots in General Election

Bulgarian voters cast a total of 80 000 invalid ballots at the May 12 general election, according to officials.

BTV has informed that some of the void ballots were cast as a sign of protest, with profanities and insults directed at politicians written on a number of them.

The TV channel has noted that the number of void ballots has decreased significantly as compared with previous elections.

The total number of Bulgarians who turned up to vote was 3 541 745, which translates into a fairly low general turnout of about 50%.

Results from the May 12 early general elections show that four Bulgarian parties made their way to Bulgaria's Parliament.

They are: the center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria, GERB, party of former Bulgarian Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, the ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, and their self-proclaimed arch enemies - the nationalist Ataka (Attack).
