The centrist GERB party is the first ever political formation in Bulgaria to win two consecutive general elections, former Prime Minister and GERB leader, Boyko Borisov, declared.

Borisov addressed the Members of the Parliament and the nation Tuesday, as the 42nd General Assembly convened for the first time.

"I turn to all political parties and call on them to join together in giving up the dishonest political methods. This Parliament faces the burden of huge expectations coming from Bulgarian people, though it was elected in an unfair campaign. The political attitudes towards the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB, are a source of alarm for Bulgarian citizens and our partners abroad. I call on you to put an end to smear campaigns; GERB will work on preserving the institutions and the image of Bulgaria," Borisov said.

He was firm in reiterating that GERB wants to void the results of the deadlocked May 12 general elections in the country.

The former PM also reminded that his party would attempt to form a new Cabinet, stressing if the latter fails, GERB would turn into a constant opposition and critic of a likely government led by the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP.

He was adamant that BSP and the other two parties which made their way into the Parliament – the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, and the far-right, nationalist Ataka, would not be able to agree on any issue and will end up misleading their voters.

Borisov called on the leaders of these parties to not be hiding behind the BSP PM nomination – former Finance Minister, Plamen Oresharski.

"This new Three-Way Coalition can destabilize the country. I am convinced they will be able to form a Cabinet, and they can count on GERB to support measures necessary for the country. Taking the PM post now is a courageous move. Oresharski must have full support in austerity measures he would be forced to undertake. Political talk is one thing, real practice is another," he declared.

GERB gathered 30.503% of the votes in Sunday's general election, final results show.

Left-wing BSP is next with 26.614%, followed by DPS with 11.293% and the far-right, nationalist Ataka - 7.302%. All other parties running in Sunday's vote have remained below the 4% election threshold.

According to the final CEC count – GERB + Ataka will have together 120 seats and DPS + BSP – another 120 in the 240-seats unicameral Parliament.

The number of MP seats each of the four parties have won are as follows – 97 for GERB, 84 for BSP, 36 for DPS, and 23 for Ataka.
