A woman has been pulled alive from the ruins of an eight-storey building that collapsed in a suburb of Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, 17 days ago.

Rescuers said the survivor, named Reshma, was found in the remains of the second floor of the Rana Plaza after they heard her crying: "Please save me."

She has been taken to hospital, but is not thought to have serious injuries, according to the BBC.

The death toll from Bangladesh's worst industrial accident has passed 1,000 as recovery teams continue to find more bodies in the wreckage.

The eight-storey Rana Plaza factory building near Dhaka collapsed on 24 April with an unknown number inside.

Authorities say about 2,500 people were injured in the accident and 2,437 people were rescued.

Survivors of the tragedy said earlier they were afraid to enter the building when cracks appeared in supporting structures a day before the incident.

Police authorities arrested the owner of the building at the end of April
