Poll Predicts Razor-Thin Race at Bulgaria's Parliamentary Elections

A fresh poll of the Sova Haris polling agency monitoring voting intentions ahead of Bulgaria's May 12 parliamentary elections gives center-right party GERB a razor-thin edge over the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP).

The poll, requested by private TV station TV7, shows that if the early elections were held today, the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party would receive 20.9% of the votes, while BSP would be backed by 20.4%.

The other parties certain to pass the 4% threshold and make it into Parliament are the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) party with 5.2% of the votes and nationalist party Ataka with 4% of the votes.

The poll of Sova Haris estimates support for the Bulgaria for Citizens Movement of former EU Commissioner Meglena Kuneva at 2.4% and support for the marginal conservative Order, Law and Justice (RZS) party at 2.4%.

The poll also indicates that the right-wing Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) would receive 1.7% of the votes, VMRO would get 1.1% and the National Front for Salvation of Bulgaria (NFSB) would be backed by 1%.

According to Sova Haris, voter turnout is expected to reach 63%.

The poll was conducted in the period May 2-7 among 1200 respondents from all over the country.

According to the results of the poll, if four parties enter Parliament, GERB would have 99 MPs, BSP 97 MPs, DPS 25 MPs, and Ataka 19 MPs.
