Bulgaria's Supreme Judicial Council (VSS) is to open Thursday a procedure for the appointment of a Sofia City Prosecutor.

The vacancy opened after Nikolay Kokinov resigned from the post on April 26, following the publication of scandalous leaked wiretaps of a conversation between him, former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, and former Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov, the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) reminds.

The case is being investigated by the Supreme Prosecutor's Office of Cassation.

Borisov, Naydenov and Kokinov are heard discussing options for obstructing court proceedings against Naydenov who faces charges of corruption and malfeasance in office.

Apart from that, Kokinov informs Borisov about the as-yet-unpublished results of an inspection of the prosecuting authority into alleged unauthorized use of special surveillance equipment.

VSS approved Kokinov's resignation from the post of administrative head of the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office at an extraordinary sitting on April 29.

Kokinov also filed his resignation as a magistrate but the motion could not be put to the vote until the finalization of disciplinary action against him over breaches of the principle of random assignment of cases.
