At least five people have been now confirmed dead after a cargo ship crashed into a control tower in the Italian port of Genoa, according to officials.

Four people are still missing.

The Jolly Nero smashed into the concrete and glass tower late at night, reducing it to rubble.

Three of those who died are believed to have been trapped inside a lift as the tower collapsed, according to the BBC.

The cause of the crash - whether human error or mechanical fault - has not yet been confirmed. Genoa's prosecutor is investigating the incident.
