ECHR: Ukraine Violated Tymoshenko's Rights

World | April 30, 2013, Tuesday // 14:43|  views

Ukraine's pre-trial detention of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko in 2011 was illegal and her rights to a legal review and compensation were violated, the European Court of Human Rights has ruled.

A Ukrainian diplomat stormed out of the courthouse in response to Tuesday’s ruling, according to reporters.

Tymoshenko, who is still in jail, had also alleged physical mistreatment, but that complaint was not upheld by the Court, the BBC informs.

The verdict does not overturn Tymoshenko’s prison sentence. The ECHR will examine that verdict later, in a separate case.

Tymoshenko is currently serving a seven-year sentence for abuse of power while in office.
