Bulgarian politicians should refrain from making inflammatory comments and let the prosecution and police do their work in the ongoing wiretapping scandal, according to Interior Minister Petya Parvanova.

"The Ministry of Interior is one of the pillars of statehood. In spite of all the scandals, thousands of officers continue their worthy work and commitments," said Gen Parvanova at a press conference Tuesday.

"Public figures ought to stop comments on wiretapping. In an ongoing investigation, the prosecution has the right to comment. Everything else harms the image of the Ministry of Interior," added Parvanova.

The wiretapping scandal in Bulgaria flared after prosecutors announced findings showing that, under previous Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov, police engaged in rampant use of special surveillance devices in violation of regulations.

Malfeasance roceedings have already started against three directors from the police.

Tuesday it was revealed that the cabinet and prosecution will work together towards streamlining wiretapping regulations to prevent further abuse.
