Nikolay Kokinov has resigned from the post of Sofia City Prosecutor amid a huge wiretapping scandal.

The resignation was filed Friday afternoon via Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov to the Supreme Judicial Council (VSS), according to a media statement of the prosecuting authority.

The audio recordings and a part of the transcripts of wiretapped conversations which allegedly took place between former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, former Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov, and Sofia City Prosecutor Nikolay Kokinov were sent to the Chief Prosecutor by Dilyana Dimitrova, Chief Editor of news agency Pik.

According to the media statement of the prosecutor's office, the Supreme Prosecutor's Office of Cassation has launched proceedings aimed at establishing the authenticity of the wiretaps and whether there is sufficient information pointing to a crime against justice and malfeasance in office.

According to the media statement of the prosecuting authority, the wiretapped conversations are not the result of authorized use of special surveillance devices.
