Bulgaria’s caretaker Prime Minister Marin Raykov has sent a letter of condolences to US President Barack Obama in the aftermath of Monday’s bomb attacks at the Boston Marathon.

“Bulgaria expresses its full support and sympathy to the families of the victims and expresses its hope that the injured will make a speedy recovery,” Raykov, who is also the Balkan country’s Foreign Minister, said in his letter.

“We are confident that the American nation will once again show its strength and unity at this difficult time. We have firm faith that the perpetrators of this terrible act, as well as their motives, will be revealed as quickly as possible,” he added.

“Such acts have no place in the 21st Century and they can only be firmly condemned.”

At least three people were killed and over 140 were injured in the two bomb explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday. The explosions occurred at about 2:45 p.m. Eastern Time, more than two hours after the first of the race's nearly 27 000 runners had crossed the finish line.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigations, FBI, and the Central Intelligence Agency, CIA, are working on two main leads in the deadly bombing.
