The final section of Bulgaria's Trakia highway connecting the southeastern cities of Yambol and Karnobat will not be ready by the completion date, March 31, according to Ekaterina Zaharieva, caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Regional Development Minister.

Zaharieva's statement, as cited by the Focus news agency, came after an inspection of the ongoing construction works in the section connecting the city of Karnobat to the village of Zimnitsa.

Saturday's inspection revealed problems with aggregate material.

Zaharieva insisted that more aggregate crushing equipment be provided, adding that materials could also be supplied from other sites, not just the nearest aggregate quarries.

The contractor tasked with building the highway section, the Trakia IV Consortium, has requested an extension of the deadline from Bulgaria's Road Infrastructure Agency due to force majeure circumstances.

According to representatives of the consortium, the Trakia highway may be completed by mid-June or end-June, depending on the weather.
