A deputy minister in charge of the energy sector in Bulgaria’s caretaker government, who was surprisingly exposed as a former state security collaborator, will seek to clear his name in court.

“I do not agree with what they [the so-called Files Commission] has said and I shall challenge their statement in court. The decisions of this commission are subject to appeal and I will approach the Supreme Administrative Court,” Bozhan Stoyanov said on Friday.

Earlier this week Bulgaria's Economy and Energy Ministry said it was at a loss after a special commission published the name of Bozhan Stoyanov as the only member of the caretaker government who has allegedly collaborated with the communist secret police.

Bulgaria's Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism Assen Vassilev was quick to send a letter to the commission’s head, asking for clarification.

“A 2008 probe of the special Bulgarian panel, investigating the communist-era police files, known as the Files' Commission, concluded there was no evidence Mr Stoyanov was a collaborator of the communist secret police,” the letter claims.

The files of the former Committee for State Security are a thorny issue in Bulgaria, especially when it comes to the past of high-ranking officials and successful businessmen.

Bulgaria's communist-era security service is believed to have remained potent after the fall of communism with the ex-operatives closely linked to the political and business establishment.

The Files Commission is a panel in charge of investigating the Communist era secret files and of exposing people at senior positions as agents or collaborators of the former Communist State Security, DS.

The blacklist of former state security agents and collaborators already features now-ex President and former Socialist leader, Georgi Parvanov, former constitutional judges, supreme magistrates, investigators, members of parliament, prominent and well-known former and current Bulgarian journalists, as well as ambassadors and diplomats abroad.
