Katowice Open: Bulgaria’s Pironkova Exits

Bulgaria’s best female tennis player Tsvetana Pironkova suffered a defeat at the inaugural Katowice Open.

Israeli lucky-loser Shahar Peer outlasted Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4).

Sixth seed Kaia Kanepi of Estonia returned a winner Tuesday. Meanwhile, Slovakian qualifier and WTA newcomer Anna Schmiedlova ousted fifth- seeded Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 6-3, 6-0.

Also on Day 2, Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens whipped Spaniard Lara Arruabarrena- Vecino 6-1, 6-1; Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu overcame France's Mathilde Johansson 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1; Luxembourg's Mandy Minella came back to beat Serb Vesna Dolonc 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2; and Italian qualifier Maria Elena Camerin dismissed Slovak Jana Cepelova 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.

This week's top seeds are former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic and Italian veteran Roberta Vinci. Kvitova will meet Japan's Misaki Doi, while Vinci will face Czech Andrea Hlavackova on Wednesday.
