A passer-by was accidentally shot and killed by a security guard in Sofia Monday afternoon.

The incident happened at around 5 pm on Monday in the Zona B5 residential district in Sofia on the premises of a private company, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR).

A 36-year-old security guard opened fire at a thief with a legally-owned weapon but instead hit a 71-year-old man who was passing by.

The security guard took the injured to the Pirogov hospital where the man died.

The guard was arrested and was fully cooperative with the police.

Pre-trial proceedings have been opened into the case.
