UK leaders, including Queen Elizabeth II and PM David Cameron have expressed their grief at Monday's passing of longtime British PM Margaret Thatcher.

"It was with great sadness that l learned of Lady Thatcher’s death. We've lost a great leader, a great Prime Minister and a great Briton," tweeted Cameron.

The Queen has confirmed she has learned of Thatcher's demise and will send a message to her family.

"Margaret Thatcher was one of the defining figures in modern British politics," said UK Deputy PM and Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg.

"Whatever side of the political debate you stand on, no-one can deny that as prime minister she left a unique and lasting imprint on the country she served," added Clegg.

The British government has announced that Thatcher will be accorded the same status of funeral as the Queen Mother and Princess Diana, but will not lie in state, in accordance with her own wishes.
