Bulgaria faced "bankruptcy" 3 times in the last 3 years, but was rescued by the efforts of former Finance Minister Simeon Djankov, according to the latter's own assessment.

Djankov was commenting the decision of former ruling GERB party not to include the former leading cabinet minister in its lists for upcoming May early elections.

"It is a fact that in 2009, in 2010, and in 2011 the state was facing bankruptcy and if we were not so disciplined, we would have defaulted," said the former FinMin.

According to Djankov, "figures and international experts" attest that he has left Bulgaria in a very sound financial condition.

The former Minister of Finance attributed the severe economic hardships experienced by Bulgarians to the crisis in Europe and an alleged "60 years of socialist rule."

He said that he does not feel offended by GERB's decision to leave him out, commenting that he had decided to leave politics well ahead.

"I was never a GERB member, my role in the cabinet was an expert one," said Djankov.

However, end of 2012 the then current Bulgarian FinMin had clearly stated his ambition to run as MP for the upcoming elections.

Djankov resigned from cabinet on February 18, after a string of protests against economic stagnation in Bulgaria, to be followed by a resignation of then-PM Boyko Borisov two days later.
