A total of 38 political parties and 7 coalitions will take part in the May 12 early parliamentary elections, according to Biser Troyanov, Spokesperson of Bulgaria's Central Electoral Commission (CEC).

Troyanov, as cited by Darik Radio, announced Friday that the final number of participants in the May 12 elections had become clear after the CEC issued a decision deleting the registration of the coalition VMRO-Orlov Most and rejecting the cancellation of the registration of 5 parties.

The CEC refused to delete the registration of the Blue Unity party of Nadezhda Neynski, the Party of Bulgarian United Social Democrats, the Bulgarian Agrarian National Union, the National Movement for Rights and Liberties, and Political Club Ecoglasnost of Emil Georgiev.

The CEC explained its rejection with the fact that the Election Code did not stipulate rules allowing such a step.

The CEC noted that the only reason for deleting a party from the list of participants in the May 12 parliamentary elections was flaws in the petition endorsing the party.

The right-wing Blue Unity party was registered for the May 12 elections on the last day of the deadline but after they failed to reach agreement with the Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) party for a coalition, they asked the CEC to delete their registration.

Shortly after that, Blue Unity declared they would not participate in the early parliamentary elections.

The parties who were denied deletion of registration were also told that they could not have their deposits of BGN 10 000 back because the sum was only reimbursed to parties who had received 1% of the votes at the elections.

The five political formations which were refused deletion of registration can appeal the decision of the CEC within 3 days before the Supreme Administrative Court (VAS).
