Caretaker Agriculture Minister Ivan Stankov has said that Bulgaria will seek EU funding for developing rose production and tobacco growing at the meeting of Member States' ministers of fisheries and agriculture in Luxembourg.

Stankov, as cited by Darik radio, made clear Tuesday that Bulgaria would seek support and demand opportunities to stimulate the two sectors financed with national aid at the current stage.

Bulgaria's caretaker Agriculture Minister emphasized that Bulgaria and Romania would receive increased agriculture allocations during the next programming period.

"The funds under the first pillar, agriculture, amount to around EUR 7.5 B, which is much more than the current allocations. This means that over EUR 1 B will be distributed per year during the seven-year period. No less than 25% for agro-ecological purposes will be transferred from the so-called second pillar," he stated.

Stankov also said that he would direct efforts towards supporting and developing small farms and agricultural producers.

He said that this would happen if support for small agricultural producers and producers operating in underprivileged regions was separated from coupled support.

Stankov admitted that the proposal had met substantial resistance from large-scale businesses.
