Bulgaria's Chief Secretary of the Interior Ministry, Kalin Georgiev, has said that the decision to keep former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov under special protection was driven by the total of over 20 threats to his life.

In a Saturday interview for private TV station bTV, Georgiev made clear that some of the tip-offs on threats against Tsvetanov had been submitted by international security services.

He explained that the total of 20+ threats had been received in the course of one year.

Georgiev emphasized that the high level of concern over the threats had made it necessary to keep Tsvetanov under protection by guards of the National Security Service (NSO) after the collective resignation of the center-right GERB government.

Earlier on Saturday, caretaker Interior Minister Petya Parvanova confirmed in an interview for 24 Hours daily that intelligence services had referred tip-offs on a possible threat to the life of Tsvetanov and his family to NSO.

On March 20 it turned out that the former GERB government had passed a decision on March 4 to keep the NSO guards for Tsvetanov after he left the post of Interior Minister because his life was under threat.
