Bulgaria's Health Ministry has reiterated that it will launch a campaign for the prevention of suicides in the country.

The announcement comes amid what has been described as a surge in suicides in the poverty-stricken EU member state.

The action for the rescue of desperate Bulgarians will begin on Monday. Health inspectors and psychologists will be searching for risk groups to help improve their spirit.

Deputy Health Minister Miroslav Nenkov has noted that a suicide prevention campaign should not be expected to yield immediate results.

"If it can stop at least one person (from committing suicide), this measure will be successful," he told bTV.

Nenkov explained that experts will teach citizens to spot symptoms of depression in their relatives. Experts will also seek direct contact with those who are most severely depressed.

A total of six people set themselves on fire in Bulgaria over the last month.

In addition to self-immolation, a suicide wave seems to have invaded Bulgaria with daily reports about people hanging themselves, jumping for bridges and high-story buildings, and throwing themselves under trains, among others.
