The surge in support for the anti-EU UK Independence Party (UKIP) has been confirmed by a new poll.

UKIP  hit a record 17% in the ComRes poll for the Independent on Sunday and Sunday Mirror.

UKIP's campaign has repeatedly warned of a flood of arrivals from Bulgaria and Romania from January 1, 2014, when citizens of the European Union's two poorest countries will be able to work in Britain freely.

The latest ComRes poll put centre-left Labour on 37%, the centre-right Conservatives on 28% and the Liberal Democrats on just 9%.

If there was a general election tomorrow, the poll would give Labour a 102-seat majority.

British Prime Minister David Cameron remains more popular than his own party, by 26% to 23%.
