Marin Raykov will head Bulgaria's caretaker government until the May 12 elections, the president officially announced on Tuesday, confirming earlier reports. He will also serve as foreign minister.

Until the high-level and rather surprising appointment at the helm of Bulgaria's caretaker cabinet Raykov served as the country's Ambassador to France.

Prior to accepting this position, he served as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government of Boyko Borisov.

The members of Bulgaria's caretaker government were announced at 4 pm on Tuesday by President Rosen Plevneliev.

President Plevneliev and the caretaker Prime Minister are to make public statements.

The caretaker government is to prepare the early elections scheduled for May 12.

One week ago, Plevneliev announced that the caretaker government would include three Deputy Prime Ministers.

The caretaker government is to function under the motto "For Europe, for democracy, for economic development," Plevneliev declared.

On February 21, Bulgaria's Parliament approved the resignation of the government of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and his ruling center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party amid unprecedented protests against unbearable utility bills, monopolies, and wide-spread poverty.
