Power utility EVN is expected to discontinue supply for the Plovdiv St. Marina metropolitan cathedral after the auction metropolitan bishop Nikolay's flashy hand watch fell through.

The sale of bishop Nikolay's controversial Rolex was intended to cover the cathedral's overdue electricity bills.

Set with a starting price of BGN 11,600, some EUR 6,000, the auction fell through Sunday, as no bidders showed up.

According to an EVN release, electricity to the metropolitan church in Bulgaria's second-largest city will be stopped on Wednesday.

The St. Marina cathedral received a bill worth BGN 2,940 for January.

Ongoing popular protests in Bulgaria which toppled PM Boyko Borisov's cabinet initially started due to ire caused by what many believed to be disproportionate energy bills, and the mismanagement of Bulgaria's energy sector.
