Evgenia Haritonova has been named as the new head of Bulgaria's State Commission for Energy and Water Regulation.

Haritonova is currently Deputy Economy Minister in charge of energy.

Haritonova graduated the Technical University in Sofia, field Electric Engineer. She received a postgraduate degree for economy and energy management at the University of National and World Economy in Sofia and A.T. Kearney (Denmark). Between 1995 and 1997 Haritonova specialized in the World Bank, and later in PAI and the University of Bath, London.

Haritonova was one of the experts who established the State Commission for Energy and Water Regulation back in 1999.

The former chair of the energy watchdog, Yuliana Ivanova, resigned just several days after she was appointed in February over findings that she had been running an online store selling cigarettes illegally.

All six members of the State Commission for Energy and Water Regulation resigned a few days later.

At a press conference on Monday, outgoing members of Bulgaria's energy watchdog explained that the upcoming reduction of electricity prices would be achieved without changes to the energy mix.
