Two exceptional Bulgarian women were recognized Tuesday for moving science forward and granted fellowships by L'Oreal Bulgaria and UNESCO's program "For Women in Science".
Emmy Haladzhova and Silvia Bakalova were awarded national grants for their outstanding contributions in science at an official ceremony in Sofia, hosted by Sofia University Kliment Ohridski.
Along with showing them to thousands of people and telling them where those women are planning to go into the future, the winners received fellowships worth EUR 5000 each, which they will be able to use for scientific research in Bulgaria.
The fellowship will also help the two charming Bulgarian ladies find a network of colleagues in their specialized area, which is often difficult as relevant researchers and activists can be spread across generations, cultures and continents.
Emmy Haladzhova, a scientist from the Institute of Polymers at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), was awarded for her project on controlled transfer of DNA.
Silvia Bakalova from the Institute of Solid State Physics with BAS was recognized for her research into laser deposited nanostructures.
L'Oreal Bulgaria and UNESCO's fellowship program "For Women in Science" was launched for the third time in Bulgaria in September last year.
The program is backed by Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski and the Bulgarian Ministry of Education.
Women with PhD degrees aged up to 35 and working in the sphere of Life Sciences were eligible for the fellowships.
"The high quality of the projects that applied this year comes to prove the importance of the program not only for young women scientists in Bulgaria, but also for the entire scientific community in the country," UNESCO Director-General, Bulgarian Irina Bokova, said in a written address to the ceremony.
"I ??am convinced that through this initiative, women scientists will be able to implement their scientific projects and thus support our common goal for peace, equality, sustainable development and social justice."
The L'Oreal-UNESCO For Women in Science program has been promoting women in scientific research on a global scale since 1998.
The unique partnership is built around the L'Oreal-UNESCO Awards, the UNESCO-L'Oreal International Fellowships, and L'Oreal-UNESCO National Fellowships with the support of the UNESCO National Commissions.
