The European People's Party (EPP) has expressed its "support and understanding" concerning the resignation of Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov and his Cabinet.

EPP President Wilfried Martens said "Prime Minister Borisov took a courageous decision in favour of his country and citizens, given the difficult circumstances they are currently facing."

"Prime Minister Borisov has put first the stability and the general interest of Bulgaria above partisan interests," Martens claimed, according to a press release.

"Needless to say, the EPP will keep supporting Boyko Borisov and the GERB party in their efforts to safeguard prosperity and stability for Bulgarians and to keep Bulgaria firmly anchored in the European project."

Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov made the shocking announcement Wednesday that his cabinet is to resign en masse around noon. The move follows a tumultuous week of public anger over rising electricity prices, corruption and austerity measures that ignited mass protests nationwide.

The resignation was accepted by the Bulgarian Parliament Thursday.
