Police Clash with Protesters in Front of Bulgarian Parliament

Thousands of Bulgarians have assembled in downtown Sofia for a second day Monday evening, with clashes erupting with police in front of Parliament.

Thousands of ralliers assembled at Orlov Most, blocking the main Tsarigradsko Shosse Blvd, then moving on to the House of Parliament.

The indignants are protesting economic and social stagnation in Bulgaria and requesting the resignation of PM Boyko Borisov's cabinet.

Thousands have also assembled in Varna, where they have blocked the road to seaside resort Zlatni Pyasatsi north of the city.

Sunday Bulgaria saw the largest nationwide protests since the January 1997 rallies during an economic and financial meltdown that had grabbed the country.

Tens of thousands assembled in more than 30 cities across the country, ired by high prices of power and low incomes.

Monday Bulgaria's Vice-PM and Minister of Finance Simeon Djankov filed his resignation without giving an explanation of his move.

Protesters in Sofia are chanting "Resignation!", "Mafia!", and "Djankov's gone, now is Boyko's turn!"

In spite of calls for peaceful rallying, some protesters are resorting to throwing stones at police officers and overturning garbage containers.

Protesters have assembled in other cities, such as Stara Zagora and Kyustendil.

In Sofia, at least eleven persons have been detained, and several, including police officers, have been injured.

In Varna, protesters have dispersed to walk home after 9 pm EET.
