The UN Security Council has strongly condemned North Korea's latest nuclear test, calling Pyongyang's latest defiant act "a clear threat to international peace and security."

"The members of the Security Council strongly condemned this test, which is a grave violation of Security Council resolutions," South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan, whose country is president of the council this month, told reporters. He said the council would now consider "appropriate measures."

The non-binding statement was approved by all 15 council members, including China.

North Korea vowed on January 23 to strengthen its military capabilities and step up its controversial nuclear program. The announcement came as a response to the UN Security Council's new sanctions on the country over the December rocket launch.
