At least 36 people died in a stampede during a Hindu festival in northern India.

The death toll was initially put at 22. Fourteen people died of sustained injuries in hospitals overnight, the Hindustan Times reported.

According to authorities, at least 30 other pilgrims were injured in the crush at the main rail station in the pilgrim city of Allahabad.

Tens of thousands of people were in the station when a section of a footbridge there collapsed, leading to the stampede late on Sunday.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh extended his condolences to relatives of those killed in the tragedy and asked the Railway Ministry to provide all possible assistance.

An estimated 30 million pilgrims gathered for the holiest day of India's Kumbh Mela, the largest religious festival in the world, which began in Allahabad on January 14 and lasts for 55 days.
